Membury Camp Hillfort, Berkshire/Wiltshire border

Membury Camp (also known as Membury fort, Membury hillfort) is a large Iron Age bivallate hillfort of around 34 acres (13.7 ha) which straddles the Wiltshire/Berkshire border. The defences consist of a ditch sandwiched between two impressive banks.

The original entrance is on the north east side, where there is a slightly inturned gap, which was at one point defended by a flanking diagonal outwork.(1) This outwork unfortunately no longer exists, having fallen prey to the construction of the nearby World War Two airfield.
